NetNewsWire

I finally got around to registering my copy of NetNewsWire today, it feels good to send Brent & Sheila some money, as they really produce a great app. I like it so much that I don't even launch my Windows aggregators anymore, I do all my RSS reading on my PowerBook. If you're using the Lite version, do the right thing and register it, it's a great app, let's make sure it stays that way. :)

iHave iSight

My wife surprised me with my birthday present, and cake, a few days early. My birthday isn't until Thursday, but when I got home from work today, she presented me with a shiny new iSight camera for my PowerBook, and a tasty cake! For those of you who'd like to try to video conference with me, my AIM/iChat username is sethb2. The Video should work not only with fellow iChat users, but also with those who have the latest version of AIM installed.

College Square goes Wi-Fi

The College Square Mall, about three-quarters of a mile from my house, has installed wireless internet now, according to an article in today's paper. The article doesn't mention whether or not access is free, though I'd assume it is. I don't know who "Cedar Valley Wi-Fi" is, as I've never heard of them, and I can't find a web site for them. I don't trust any tech-related business that can't even be bothered to get a web site online. Update: They do have a web site, which I found out by going to the mall and trying the wireless. Unfortunately, they're on crack, and are attempting to charge for access. Even if Cedar Valley Wi-Fi winds up with wireless access points on every city block, I'm not going to pay them $25/month to use it, and I doubt anyone else is either. Charging for access works when you have a captive audience, such as in an airliner, or maybe even a hotel, though I think the right price is free there too. But, in retail spaces, wireless should be offered as a way of enticing people to come to your establishment, not as a way for you to extract more money from them. I'm much more likely to eat lunch at your business if I can bring my PowerBook with me, that's where you make your money, not by charging me for the access directly.

To Russia, With Chuck

Just got the word, I'm going to be going to Russia! Chuck Sengstock and I have been tapped to go install some video conferencing equipment there. We'll leave Cedar Rapids on September 30 for the Moscow State Institute of Steel & Alloys, spend some time there, then travel by train to the Herzen State Pedgagogical University in St. Petersburg, then return back to the U.S. on October 18. Time to start learning some Russian...

Gmail accounts

I've got four Gmail account invites left to give out, they'll go to the first four people who post a comment on this, and include their first name, last name, and an e-mail address to send the invite to. If you're invited, please accept the invite ASAP, as Gmail seems to give me more invites after everyone accepts. Update: Wow, those went fast. I'll hopefully have some more as soon as the lucky first four of you accept your accounts.

Second Update: Yep, I've got more. Took care of Al from the comments, Bill didn't leave an e-mail address. Still have four more Gmail accounts left to give out. Post a comment if you want one. :)

Third Update: Okay, I'm out of invites again. I'll post a new entry when I get more. Thanks for playing!

AirPort Express

Wow, the AirPort Express was meant for me. I've been looking for a wireless bridge for sometime, as my wireless signal doesn't reach well into my bedroom, where I often use my PowerBook. I was planning on placing the bridge, when I found one, next to my stereo downstairs, where it'd have line-of-site to my base station on the other side of the house. Now, Apple comes along with a device that'll let me have my wireless range extender, and let me stream all my iTunes to my surround-sound equipped stereo system? Cool! Not to mention it has a built-in USB print server, and I can toss it in my laptop bag if I'm on a trip and will need wireless access on the road. Does it get any better than that? Kudos to Apple on a great product, I've already ordered mine. :)
