I have to admit, I too hate seeing people stretch their 4:3 images onto a 16:9 screen.  It's just wrong.  George Ou has a good simple article for the average new widescreen TV owner:

Pro tip: avoid going near the river unless you want to hike in a muddy hellscape from last year’s flooding.
