Cable Modems vs. DSL

I saw in this story over at News.com that Excite@Home has asked Pacific Bell to yank their ads claiming that cable modem users are "web hogs" and that their DSL technology is better because it isn't "shared". I know that this is a pretty hot topic as broadband becomes available to more and more people, but honestly, how much difference is there? I've got a cable modem at home, and I've never experienced it running slow, in fact, it's faster than our campus Internet connection here at UNI. Any thoughts?
